Do you ever wonder if you are using the proper technique to winterize a residence you are leaving? Maybe you are headed out on vacation or your have a second home that you only visit from time to time. How do you ensure that you won’t have a major pipe burst situation when you return? Often times fixing a leaky pipe is challenging because you don’t know where the leaks are at and how many there are especially if the leak is due to freeze bursts.
The proper way to winterize any residence is to connect an air compressor to the water lines and actually blow them out with air. Its really the only way to guarantee that all the water in the water lines and in the water heater is completely removed. It will not void the warranty on the new heater if you do not blow the lines out but freeze damage to the unit is not covered under warranty anyway. I would recommend installing a hose bibb in the water line near the water heater to quickly and easily be able to connect a compressor to the water lines.
